Vietnam responds to the new wave of Covid-19 with variant Delta

The Delta variant with faster infect, more dangerously has made the epidemic prevention achievements of all countries in the world severely affected, including results in vaccination strategy. Countries with the top vaccination rates in the world such as the US and UK increased in infections.

In the wave of Covid-19 caused by Delta variant, developing countries are the hardest hit due to limited health systems and low vaccination rates.

Vietnam is a successful country in the fight against Covid-19 in 2020 and early 2021 with just over 3000 cases and 35 deaths. However, from the end of April to the beginning of May 2021, the number of cases and the mortality also increased  rapidly. Over mor than last one month, the daily active cases has remained 10,000 and the daily deaths is around 300. The center of the epidemic is Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces.

Although the number of infections remains high, the epidemic is still under control with the number of infections not increasing as quickly as some other Southeast Asian countries thanks to strict and comprehensive measures of the Government and authorities:

(1) Vaccine diplomacy campaign: recognising the importance of Vaccines Covid-19 in preventing the pandemic, Vietnamese government has issued and effectively implemented a vaccine diplomacy campaign to get as many vaccines as possible and as soon as possible. In all talks, conferences and high-level contacts, top leaders of Vietnam requested other countries to sell, donate, give covid-19 vaccine to Vietnam.

Therefore, while there was only about 510,000 people were vaccinated on May 1, 2021, there have been more than 34,6 million injections out of a total of aproximately 50 million doses of vaccine that Vietnam has received from varius sourcesas of September 20, 2021.

(2) All Covid-19 vaccines given to Vietnamese people are free of charge. The government prioritizes vaccination for a number of target groups: (i) People living in epidemic areas; (ii) The poor, social policy beneficiaries; (iii) employees, employees’ relatives working in enterprises (including enterprises in industrial parks, export processing zones, transport, credit and tourism businesses. …), essential service businesses such as accommodation, catering, banking, health care, pharmacy, medical supplies… retail, wholesale, market, construction sites, people in the area, tourist area. Accordingly, all residents of the two largest cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, will receive at least one injection before September 15, 2021.

(3) The Vietnamese government decided to make communes a fortress against the epidemic, and the people were the center and subject of the fight against the epidemic. Because communes are the places closest to the people, understand the people the most and well know the situation of the people. At the same time, the government strengthen mobile medical stations and increase the number of healthworkers to communes.

(4) Ensure food security for the people with free food bags and provide a phone number so that people who are hungry can call there to be provided food.

With the determination of the Government and the consent of the people, it is hoped that the Covid-19 epidemic situation in Vietnam will soon end.
