Uzbekistan: The role of the media in covering the State program “Year of attention and care for the senior generation”

March 18, 2015  : On March 12 in Tashkent held a scientific-practical conference on topic “The role and importance of the media in establishing an effective public control over the implementation of the State program “Year of attention and care for the senior generation”.

The event was organized by Public Fund for Support and Development of Independent Print Media and News Agencies of Uzbekistan together with the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan, the Independent Institute for monitoring the formation of civil society, as well as the Public Fund for Support of NGOs and other civil society institutions under the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The aim of the conference was to discuss issues on the operational, quality and reliable media coverage of priority, the broad objectives set out in the State program of reforms, as well as further improvement of professional skills of journalists in the establishment of effective public control over the participation of state and economic structures, local authorities and non-profit organizations.

It was attended by members of the government and management, managers of Council of Ministers of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, hokimiyats of Tashkent city and all regions, representatives of public organizations, as well as journalists of the national and regional media.

As was noted at the event, the main objective of large-scale reforms implemented in all areas, is to create a strong civil society based on democratic principles, human interests, improvement of the people and the country’s development.

During the conference, participants were provided with detailed information on the activities of ministries and agencies responsible for the execution of the tasks set in the State program, which covers comprehensive measures to improve the quality of life of older people, expansion of providing them with material and moral support, improving the social, pensions and health care of elderly people. Journalists have set ourselves the task of appropriate substantive media coverage of comprehensive measures implemented under the program.

Participants noted that one of the positive qualities of the conference is the participation of representatives of central and regional media information services staff of state bodies, which allows scaling up the coverage of the stages of mainstream programs and the formation of a fair presentation of the measures implemented throughout the country.

At the end of the event, it was decided to hold similar conferences with representatives of the media in all regions of the country.
