The brainchild of Dr.(Prof) A.K.Gupta, AKGsOVIHAMS was started on 8th August 1999 with a vision and aim to create a place where health of each and every patient is of prime importance. As no medical system is complete in itself, Dr. Gupta thought of creating a habitat where all systems of medicine can work together in sync for the best welfare of the patients. This thought of integration of all medical systems way back in 90s was much ahead of the times and today we see everyone talking about the integration of all medical systems to provide best possible healthcare. India leads in this thought process with having its own ministry for alternative systems of medicine called AYUSH which is being promoted by the government quite well as compared to the Allopathic system of Medicine. OVIHAMS was also accredited in the LimcaBook of Records in the year 2001 as the 1st Institution in India to offer an integrated system of healthcare services.
So, the dream with which AKGsOVIHAMS was started and the pioneering vision of Dr.A.K.Gupta is now a reality and giving all possible options to the patients at their disposal. The integration of medical systems is extremely crucial for the collective health of the nation as all systems can work complimenting each other to provide best possible treatment modalities and AKGsOVIHAMS strives to provide that. Surely, if the vested interests and ego clashes are kept aside, definitely the entire nation would find such integrated medical centres in every major city of the country.
Also, just recently it was proposed by the government of India to bring out a Digital Health Card programme. It is a fantastic idea and we congratulate the government for that. Back in 2000 itself, the health card concept was introduced at AKGsOVIHAMS where each and every patient was handed over a Medical I-Card that would carry all the basic information of the person and all relevant medical history. This would make it easier for the patient to consult any doctor anywhere in the country. This would not only save a lot of time, but also can prove to be extremely beneficial in cases of Emergency where many times unknowingly and unintentionally some treatment can be given which can be disastrous for that particular patient.
Also, in the recently introduced, New Education Policy, the government of India has proposed a different medical education structure at the under graduate level. The proposal is that a medical student be taught basic knowledge about all the various medical systems in India and he may have the option to choose which medical system he wishes to pursue in the future. This will give the future generation of Doctors a fair understanding about all systems of medicine and thus will be helpful in rooting out the diseases. This thought was also advocated by Dr. Gupta long ago when AKGsOVIHAMS had come into existence. Dr. Gupta’s thought process behind this idea was not just to provide an opportunity for medical students to have a basic understanding of all systems of medicine, but also the fact that having an idea about how different systems of medicine operatewould empower the professional to refer the patient to the most suitable doctor as per the patient’s condition. We at AKGsOVIHAMS are hopeful of better days ahead as this education policy could lead to the emergence of doctors who would be more adept to the complexities of health and illness in the coming future.
