New Delhi: Global Motor Neuron Disease (MND) Awareness Day is observed annually on June 21st. It is an occasion for the global MND community to come together, share stories, and show support for those living with and affected by MND.
One such initiative was taken by AKGsOVIHAMS Medical Centre, in association with Shanti Foundation, by organizing a Free Webinar on 1st June (Sunday) for the patients with MND and their caregivers. More than 50 patients and their caregivers from different parts of India, and a few foreign nationals, benefited from this webinar.
Prof. Dr. A. K. Gupta, Founder-Director AKGsOVIHAMS, chaired the session and shared his experience of working with this community during his clinical practice of over 45 years. He highlighted the success of Homoeopathic medicines in relieving patients of the suffering caused due to this fast progressing, degenerative disease. Dr. Gupta also emphasized on the role and importance of a comprehensive treatment, medication along with regular Physiotherapy, Counselling and Speech therapy, for the patients’ holistic recovery.
Dr. Nakul Parashar, Trustee & CEO of Shanti Foundation Global, elaborated on the need for increased awareness about ALS/MND and the power of sharing experiences of the MND community so that the medical fraternity takes notice of the wonders Homoeopathic medicines have been able to achieve for this supposedly “incurable” disease.
Many of the participants affirmed this by sharing stories of their ongoing recovery as a result of this comprehensive treatment approach and the constant support from their family members. Dr. Sanket Gupta (Homoeopathic Consultant) and Kaartik Gupta (Clinical Psychologist), from AKGsOVIHAMS, highlighted the role of psychological processes like our thoughts, mindset, ways of effectively dealing with complex emotions, and managing caregiver burn-out as imperative, and often ignored, factors affecting the patient’s recovery.
AKGsOVIHAMS, in association with Shanti Foundation, plans to form a Support Group for patients with ALS/MND and their caregivers so that they do not feel alone in their journey. Dr. Gupta also stated that more such events and webinars will be organized in the future for the benefit of the community.
