Camp: Seoul, 01 October 2016: Hankuk University of Foreign Affairs (HUFS) conferred Honorary Doctorate on Lok Sabha Speaker Smt. Sumitra Mahajan, in Seoul today.
In her Acceptance speech, Smt. Mahajan said that she was honoured to receive an honorary doctorate from the prestigious HUFS University. Observing that HUFS is recognized as the best institution for foreign language education in Korea, she praised the university as a key promoter of international understanding, having MoUs with over 500 universities and institutions in 84 countries.
Smt. Mahajan noted that an award such as this honours both the recipient and her or his profession. As such, she was honoured to accept the recognition both in her personal capacity, and as an elected representative of the Indian people. She noted that the honour assumes special significance as the public rarely recognizes the work of Parliamentarians.
Lok Sabha Speaker further said there is a strong commonality between the work that is done at a University, and at the legislature of any democracy, as they both are at the service of the people. In this backdrop, she observed that HUFS’s honorary doctorate is a symbol of the commonalities that bind the two professions, and their objectives, both as academics and as legislators. She had accepted the Honorary Doctorate in that spirit, and in the recognition of HUFS’s support for shared objectives of improving mutual understanding, she added.
Smt. Mahajan is currently leading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation to South Korea (RoK).
